Settin' 'er up! (...man)

I'm going to spend the next couple of days getting this somewhat set up. First post will be midnight this Sunday, Mountain Standard Time, which is 7 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time. First article shall be on "Bird" (Charlie Parker).

If you would like to become a contributor please comment here and I will add you to the group. I've allowed anonymous posters for comments as well, so that people don't have to be bloggers to share an opinion, story, or just generally contribute.

Thanks for the comments all, hope to be up and running soon!

  • Hell yeah, ya got Ella Fitzgerald!
    Excellent!This blog is awesome,
I'm going to be educating myself on more jazz people that I've always meant to check out but have put off over the years.Hey, is Theolonious on the list? I'm sure he is. I like that guy. I know some jazz, he's one of the few I've listened to.I was happy to see Brubeck there. :)
Good job, Jack, beautiful new blog!

  • Yeah! You've got Buddy Rich! I loved
that guy! When I was about 19, I had
a cassette of the best of Buddy, with stuff like...um, Dance of the mushroom people"? But I loved that cassette. I
played it all the time in my walkman. That's too f*ckin' cool.:)

  • Add me...please. Looks cool!

  • Thanks for adding Ertha Kitt. I wonder if Dina Washington is too much blues, not enough jazz.

    Thanks.

  • Dinah Washington, unfortunately, doesn't have a good website seperate from Verve.

I would qualify her as Jazz, as well as blues. I'm sure we'll have quite a bit of overlap from soul, R&B, blues, gospel... these were all related, after all.

  • Jack, since Charlie Parker will kick it off I think you should include the link that I use after my little story "Who Cares How Charlie Parker Died." Bloggers would get to hear 3 songs and see numerous pictures and so on. At the bottom of Charlie Parker it links to John Coltrane and 3 more songs. It's a good link!

If you like the link, don't bury it, but put it right out front with a picture of Bird.

  • Hey Jack, I just now posted a reply to your comments at my blog.:)

But I have questions, and I'm not going pretend to know more about jazz than I already do. I know of things that I've heard and liked. I'm just setting this up so that if I sound totally clueless, it's intended. lol I'm trying to learn.

So here's a question. What about people like Jean Luc Ponty? Is he jazz? Or? I've liked JLP my friend
    used to play. Overall
I'ven noticed that I tend to be jazz guitar driven. I went to that link you have but then I didn't really know what to type in. It's more that I wanted them to give me a list of jazz guitarists that I could go from there.
Anyway, I don't think Jean Luc is
crap. Not at all.But I don't know if he's even jazz. Or should there be an alternative jazz category? Jazz fusion? :)

By Blogger Nabonidus, at Mon Dec 12, 01:52:00 PM MST

  • Ooop, I should have made more clear that I know JLP is violin, in that last post.

By Blogger Nabonidus, at Mon Dec 12, 01:54:00 PM MST

  • nabonidus,

I would call him fusion, but he does warrant going on the list. This also reminds me that I need to put Bela Fleck on the list as well. (Banjo of all damn things... :p)

Last time I saw the Flecktones play, the bass player, while in the middle of a solo, throws his bass over his shoulder, and of course it is on a strap so it comes right back around under his other armpit, and he keeps playing the solo like nothing happened. CRAZY.

I will add them to the links now, thanks.
